|As soloist with many orchestras, as a captivating recitalist and chamber music performer, in an international career that spans four continents, Michel Lethiec has become established as one of the finest clarinettists performing today.
Born in France, he studied at the prestigious Paris Conservatory where he earned first prizes in clarinet and in chamber music. The next year he won the interpretation prize in the international competition in Belgrade.
Since his debut at the Carnegie Hall in 1980, Mr Lethiec has toured extensively throughout Europe, United States, Middle and Far East.
Lethiec has performed with such artists as Leonard Rose, Gary Hoffmann, Joseph Suk, Wladimir Spivakov, Dimitry Sitkovetsky, Philippe Entremont, Jean-Bernard Poreruler… As a guest artist with St Martin in the fields, English Chamber, Scottish orchestra, Norvegian chamber orchestra, SIovac Chamber, Concentus Hungaricus, Moscou chamber orchestra, with Stockholm, Barcelone, Bonn, Radio France Philharmoniques. Talich, Vermeer, Takacs, Pasquier, Mozarteum, Lindsay quartets…
On “The Mermoz” for the musical cruise, has shared the platform with Maurice Andre, Jean-Pierre Rampal, Mistlav Rostropovitch.
Recent and upcoming appearances include Budapest and Prague Festivals, Alice Tully Hall in New York, Champs Elysees Theater in Paris, Hambourg Philharmonie, Munich Herkulasaal and Wien Musikverein, Tchaikowsky Hall in Moscow.
He is regulary invited to give master classes abroad, and he is the first west european clarinettist invited to teach in China (Shangai Conservatory).
Mr Lethiec masters the whole clarinet repertory. He is also an enthusiastic player of contemporary music, and has premiered concertos and pieces by Ballif, Boucourechliev, Corrigliano, Risset.
Michel Lethiec’s extensive discography includes numerous recordings of the solo and chamber music clarinet repertory, with Scottish Ensemble, Moscou virtuoses, Concentus Hungaricus, Lindsay Quartett… for different labels (Lyrinx – R.C.A. – Bis – Sonophyl).
Michel Lethiec is the artistic director of the Pau Casals festival in Prades.
